The reason you got downvoted probably is because there are inherent dangers to increasing the levels of CO2 in your body. The body diverts it's energy to the fight or flight reflex and shuts down non-essentials like hiccups. Getting scared causes a similar reaction. They will calm down very quickly because freaking out takes a lot of effort. That's why they do this for people that are hyperventillating or freaking out. Your body will require less oxygen to function. It does this to slow down the production of excess CO2. When your body detects elevated levels of CO2 in your bloodstream it starts to shut down non-essential functions. YES THIS WORKS! And here's why: Your body breathes to get rid of CO2. We've tried every old wive's tale remedy in the book. But then I got them, so that ruined that theory. She had leukemia when she was younger, and for the first 3 years of her hiccups, we thought they were just a delayed side effect from the chemo and radiation. My older sister has had them for 13 years. Oh, and when they come back, there's a chance they could be worse than before". it'll probably just pause them, unless you take them for the rest of your life. The doctor handed me the prescription saying "this might not work. I mentioned them again 2 years ago to a doctor, and they prescribed me Metoclopramide, which is something that they'll sometimes prescribe to someone that has had "normal" hiccups for a week straight or so and they won't stop. The doctor's response was "It's just part of growing up". I first got them when I was 13, and when I was 16, I went to the doctor's for a cold or something, and I mentioned that I'd had the hiccups. And actually, for the past 3 weeks, the hiccups have been coming pretty consistently in pairs. They've only ever stopped when I've been ridiculously stressed, and that's only happened twice, and both times they were only gone for 2 days. I get one every half or hour, and have for ten years. I actually did an IAmA on it about 6 months ago, but I can explain here! Reporting it brings it to our attention and will definitely be looked at by someone. If something is not reported, it will most likely slip past us.
